When I go into the city I have a set first destination, usually some place I really want to have the time to look at and not be bothered with crowds, and then have a looser plan for the rest of the day. What usually ends up happening after I finishing with my first destination is that I wander around what ever area I am in for awhile, then take out the travel book, see what area is close to where I have ended up, meander on over there and then wander some more, hitting the high points along the way. Although it would be faster for me to hop on the metro or bus a lot of the time, I never do. I only use public transportation when I am coming and leaving the city. I love looking at the buildings, people watching and seeing things I wouldn't have seen if I had taken a more direct route.
Yesterday I wandered a lot. It was pretty fantastic.
